A food truck for inclusion: opportunities and success stories on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

streetfoodystories

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrated on December 3, is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusion and to promote every individual’s right to active participation in society. One of the most original and effective ways to break down social barriers and foster integration is through food trucks, true mobile laboratories of creativity and inclusion.

On this occasion, we want to share two success stories that have inspired and supported many people, demonstrating how a food truck can become a powerful tool for change:

Anffas Mirandola
Part of the Anffas network, a historic Italian association advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, Anffas Mirandola developed the Frolleria project, an artisanal cookie workshop directly involving young people with disabilities in all phases of the work. To expand the participants’ opportunities and increase the Frolleria’s visibility, Anffas Mirandola chose an NP6 Flò outfitted as a mobile cookie bakery.

This vehicle serves as a mobile sales point and a social hub: the young participants take the cookies to markets, town squares, and events. Direct sales allow them to develop social and professional skills. Each interaction with the public is an opportunity to raise awareness about inclusion, showcasing Anffas’s activities and the remarkable value of the work carried out by this inspiring association.

St’Orto Prenestino
Founded in 2021 in the heart of Parco Prampolini in Rome, St’Orto Prenestino is much more than an agricultural project. This social enterprise focuses on the socio-professional integration of individuals with a history of mental health challenges, harnessing the power of natural farming and educational activities.

Participants cultivate lavender and chili peppers within the park, following the process from planting to harvesting. Alongside these activities, there are educational programs for children and young people, designed to promote sustainable living. The Rimorchio Pizza completes this ecosystem, taking messages of hope and inclusion beyond the park’s borders.

Through the Rimorchio, St’Orto participates in fairs, festivals, and community events, where participants share their stories and showcase their newly acquired skills. The food truck becomes a direct point of connection with the community. People can enjoy pizzas, learn about the park’s activities, and support the project.

In summary, a food truck opens the door to endless possibilities, and many socially driven organizations have already tapped into its potential to:

1. Promote autonomy and self-esteem
Managing a food truck enables participants to acquire practical skills: from food preparation to customer service and logistical organization. These experiences foster autonomy and self-esteem, offering a tangible path for personal and professional growth.

2. Build networks and raise awareness
A food truck serves as a meeting place, attracting people in various settings, from local events to urban markets. Social cooperatives can use these vehicles to raise awareness about their mission, share the stories of their participants, and build supportive networks.

3. Advance inclusion through employment
Providing job opportunities within a food truck helps to promote a more inclusive society, demonstrating that everyone can contribute their unique talents. This approach not only enhances the quality of life for participants but also inspires those they encounter along the way.

We are proud to support initiatives like these, proving that food trucks can be true engines of social change. Their simplicity is their strength: they bring people together, break down barriers, and foster connection, one pizza or cookie at a time.

Project financed within the framework of POR FESR Toscana 2014/2020 aimed to:
1. sales and promotion of Made in ltaly food trucks abroad
2. improve the digital, organizational and promotional efficiency of the company
3. digitize production processes by streamlining them, sharing them, modifying the perception of the brand on the network and on social networks, also implementing the tools in terms of big data analysis
